May: one royal wedding, two bank holidays and a serious amount of fake tan

Oh May – you’ve always been one of my favourite months! Summer is just around the corner and, as we start digging out our straw hats and sandals, you kindly offer us not one but two bank holidays! How lucky we are to be given the extra time to realise that our sandals are broken, our straw hat has been unrecognisably crushed in the back of the wardrobe and our bodies are absolutely, categorically not ‘summer body ready’ (and it’s going to take a serious amount of fake tan to take the whiter-than-white edge off those legs!). Still, there’s plenty to look forward to this month that doesn’t involve covering yourself (and every surface in your bathroom) in a vaguely orange hue.

If you’re a royalist and/or enjoy a good wedding, you’ve probably already reserved your seat for the forthcoming nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. For those of you who have successfully avoided the hype thus far (presumably you don’t own a television or go outside?!) and have absolutely no idea what’s going on, Prince Harry (British royal family, sixth in line to the throne) will wed former Suits actor Meghan Markle at Windsor Castle on Saturday 19th May.

Don’t expect a post about this event on My Bellyful for two reasons: firstly, it has come to my attention that articles I promise to write in my Monthly Musings rarely come into being. Secondly, I’m not a big royalist and so the likelihood of me penning a loving tribute to the royal family is slim. Having said that, I am interested in weddings and the traditions that surround them and so you never know, I might find time to scribble something down whilst I’m watching the BBC’s never-ending coverage (I know I said I’m not a big royalist, but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to tune in!).

Also this month: National Teachers’ Day will take place on May 9th in the UK (or so Wikipedia tells me!). Despite desperately wanting to be a teacher when I was at primary school (mainly because I wanted to use a red pen!), I can honestly say that working in the education sector is not a job I’m cut out for. Teachers are often given a hard time (we all eye their six week summer holidays with a certain degree of resentment, don’t we?!) yet their jobs are easily some of the toughest around and they deserve recognition for that. I don’t intend to write a post about teachers specifically over the next month, but I may have a go at something school-related to mark the occasion.

One thing you will definitely see on My Bellyful in the coming weeks (I promise!) is a piece about Mental Health Awareness Week (14th-20th). As I’ve previously mentioned, this is a subject close to my heart and I already have an idea for a post in mind. Mental Health Awareness Week 2018 is all about stress, but you don’t need to be suffering from this particular problem in order to help raise awareness. If you know someone who’s dealing with a mental health issue and you haven’t yet reached out to let them know you’re there to listen, let Mental Health Awareness Week be the catalyst for a conversation.

So, that’s May. Thanks for reading everyone! I’m off to hunt out my wedding hat and dust off my bottle of fake tan – I guess the royals are probably doing the same, right?! 😉
