It’s been ages since I did a top five post (yes, I realise that this is a top six, but whittling this list down to five was just too much of a struggle!) and as I’m always on the look out for new and inspiring people to follow on Instagram, I thought that it would be helpful for me to share with you the Instagrammers that I’m really enjoying right now.
The accounts I follow tend to fall into two very distinct categories: mums and writers. As a new mum myself, I find Insta-mums (or at least the ones I follow) to be supportive, reassuring and, above all, realistic. Motherhood can be isolating, it can also be tear-inducingly difficult, but knowing that there are other people out there who are also finding it tough at times can be all the reassurance you need to know that you’re doing a good job.
Whilst Insta-mums make up around 30-40% of the accounts that I follow on Instagram, the other 60-70% are writers and bloggers. It’s great to find out what other people are writing about, what inspires them and how they shoehorn writing time into their everyday lives. A lot of the writers I follow tend to be journalists and authors, but I’ve also found some great bloggers through Instagram too.
So, without further ado, here’s my top six list of ladies who never fail to post inspiring, thought-provoking and humorous content:
Back in April, writer Bryony Gordon ran the London Marathon…in her underwear! Images promoting body confidence fill her feed as do posts about mental health awareness (Bryony ran the marathon for Heads Together, the mental health charity set up by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and The Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry). Bryony addresses her own relationship with mental health in her bestselling book Mad Girl and her Instagram feed is one of the most inspiring I’ve come across.
I’ve mentioned Laura Jane on My Bellyful before because I LOVE the column she writes for Red magazine! She has a lovely, easy-to-read writing style, tackles a variety of interesting subjects and her Instagram is packed full of witty posts about fashion, food, interiors (she’s recently moved into a new house) and, of course, writing. I never scroll past one of Laura’s post – they really brighten my day!
If you’re not familiar with the Instazine format then make sure you check out Selfish Mother (a brand, blog and Instazine run by founder, Molly Gunn). Every other Wednesday a new ‘issue’ (nine squares) is released featuring a range of content that will definitely keep you glued to your iPhone! Molly has also recently started promoting her Selfish Mother Masterclasses so if you want to learn more about creating a brand, launching a product and much more, then make sure you follow the link in the SF bio.
Not only do I follow author and journalist Dolly Alderton on Instagram, but I also subscribe to her newsletter (which is always insightful and hilarious!), listen to her podcast (The High Low, with fellow journalist Pandora Sykes) and her bestselling book (Everything I Know About Love) is on my TBR pile! Suffice to say, I love her writing style and her Insta account is just as entertaining.
I find it so interesting to hear how other women manage to juggle life and motherhood and I particularly enjoy getting a glimpse into the lives of this little family. Clemmie (aka Mother of Daughters) is a midwife and mum to four girls (yes, FOUR!) and as well as posting about her family, Clemmie also writes regular book reviews and conducts interviews with inspiring people. I genuinely don’t know how she finds the time to do it all – I’m tired just thinking about it!
The images on Rosie’s Instagram scream glamour as does her very popular blog, The Londoner. If you’re interested in fashion, travel or you just want to look at gorgeous pictures of London, then this is definitely the Instagram account for you. Rosie recently got married in Italy and the beautiful photography – as well as her incredible dress – had me crying with jealousy…well, almost!
